a young voice to champion Selma’s students
Building selma’s future together
ABOUT JASPREET
committed.
As a Selma native, Jaspreet Nagra recognizes the profound impact that Selma schools have had on her success. She is passionate about giving back to the community that raised her by making sure students continue to benefit from resources that help them succeed.
Jaspreet’s commitment to supporting public education has equipped her with the knowledge to help our students thrive. As Director of a non-profit called Students for Community Outreach, Promotion, and Education, she organized various programs designed to uplift underserved students. In this role, she has understood needs on both community and individual bases. These programs included teaching fitness and nutrition in elementary schools, mentoring at-risk youth, teaching English to Spanish speaking parents, and providing public health resources to underrepresented populations. She also helped create All Brains, which advocates and creates resources for neuro-diverse students who are on the Autism spectrum, have ADHD, etc. She is motivated to create access to similar resources for Selma.
Experienced.
Jaspreet has worked directly with teaching faculty and students to create more inclusive learning environments. She helped create lectures at UCLA that taught research-based teaching techniques to increase equity in student learning, especially for those who came from underprivileged areas with less academic support. In working to help students understand material in their courses, she learned about how their previous educational experiences had shaped their learning experiences in college. As a result, she knows the types of resources that could be implemented from the start of education to ensure success beyond high school. She is ready to take what she has learned to build on the excellence that exists in our district of Selma to prepare our students in success in higher education.
Plan for our schools
INvesting in students.
Our students deserve to have resources that:
foster their creativity
prioritize student mental health
provide encouragement by promoting a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset
explore restorative measures to create a positive school climate
prepare them for life outside our schools
Jaspreet will make progress towards increasing accessibility to arts, career and college readiness programs, and other resources that will support students in their educational journeys and endeavors.
empowering our teachers.
Teachers have a very powerful position in influencing students and shaping them into the successful adults they will grow to become. Unfortunately, educators are often left to fend for themselves when it comes to providing for students.
Jaspreet will ensure that our teachers’ concerns are heard in the district of Selma. She will work to provide our teachers with the proper training, support, and resources so that they are equipped with the tools they need in their vital role. Our teachers help inspire our children to become the best versions of themselves, and we need to help them be the best educators possible for our students.
transparent communication.
The decisions made by a school board should always reflect the needs of the people it represents. Parents, teachers, and students deserve to be as informed as possible in order to advocate for their needs and voice their concerns appropriately. Open and honest lines of communication between the school board and its members ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of everyone.
Jaspreet will work to increase efficient methods of communication in order to work together in creating the optimal educational environment. She will bring creative solutions that will tackle this issue even amongst obstacles of distance learning.
